Through our common faith, all Christians belong to one FAMILY. Faith overcomes all institutional, cultural and other barriers. While borders continue to exist, they are continually broken, as people from all over the world confess Jesus and in that confession become part of one fellowship.

Substitute Family and Extended Family

At the Berlin Mennonite Church, we call each other “brother” and “sister”-- at the very least we greet everyone at Sunday worship as brothers and sisters! And we use informal forms of address (“duzen” in German). We’re like an extended family. Here you’ll meet the family members that might be missing from your own family. For some our congregation is like a substitute family.

All Generations

We have many in our congregation in their 60s, 70s and beyond who contribute to congregational life with their gifts and their experience. Despite occasional physical limitations they work in many different ways to benefit congregational life.

Youth, young families, and children are always welcome to join us for church services. There is also a separate children’s room stocked with toys. Young parents with babies are free to make themselves feel at home.

Mennonite Youth North Germany (MJN) organizes family retreats every year in beautiful Ratzeberg, where families have everything they need to enjoy themselves. In addition, the MJN, as its name suggests, is devoted primarily to youth work. There are regular inter-regional events and diverse retreats and camps, where youth not only get the opportunity to get to hang out but also to think together about the Big Questions in life.

The Mennonite “Extended Family” in North Germany

Mennonites from congregations across North Germany have been meeting together for many years at a variety of “family gatherings.” The older generation meets at the Circle of Friends" retreat, the middle generation at "Circle of Friends 2", and young families and singles meet at “MüTze.” There is also a dedicated inter-regional group for women. Every year, Mennonite Women North Germany organizes a seminar and additional meetings discussing hot-button topics with inspiring speakers. The men also meet at their own retreats. These events help to develop relationships between individuals from across North Germany - a “family” that is much bigger than our congregation!

How very and pleasant it is when good kindred live together in unity!
