Around 3000 years ago, an ideal was expressed that still holds good today: LOVE your neighbor as yourself (Lev 19:18). Jesus said: Love your enemies (Mt 5:44). Love means acceptance of and a readiness to help others. To love one’s neighbor means to respect them and to help them out when they are in need. This includes everyone. Which means we need to also pray for our enemies and to treat them right, something that we need to continually learn anew.

Friendship

There is also a more specific kind of love. Friendship is a special form of love. When two or more people have a unique story together, they understand each other’s thoughts and finish each other’s sentences. They can’t imagine life without the other, and even sacrifice themselves for the other. They have formed a friendship in the deepest sense of the word. Friendships hold fast in the hardest of times. Sometimes a friendship will last a lifetime and even beyond. This is the image for the relationship between God and his Church. God remains faithful beyond our death.

Love, Sex, Marriage

Love is something that be experienced exclusively with one person. When two people give themselves exclusively to each other, a unique relationship is formed, a unique relationship which longs for exclusivity in communication and sexuality. Love and sexuality are very intimately intertwined. When two people love each other and have sex, they reveal themselves to each other and become vulnerable with one another.

When two people are intimate and remain vulnerable with each other their whole lives, it is a powerful thing. A decision for an exclusive relationship with a particular person creates security. Those who feel secure are able to be open. Faithfulness makes intimacy and vulnerability possible. Those who bind themselves are free, which may be a paradox, but is true. Both gay and straight couples can get married in our congregation. A wedding is a celebration of love, because it is a celebration of faithfulness. Love until death do us part, is something no one can promise, but something we can commit to and do everything we can in order to make it possible.

And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.
I Cor. 13:13.
