Ecumenism

We work ecumenically with other denominations and Christians. More specifically, we understand ourselves to be part of a great Christian “project.” We believe that Christians from around the world are bound together by their faith. All Christians seek the presence of God in this world and try to follow Jesus Christ in making the Kingdom of God visible here and now.

Valuing Diversity

There are many historical, theological and structural differences between churches and denominations. In some cases, these differences have led to profound conflict. Nevertheless, we emphasize our commonality on the ecumenical level. The diverse ways in which the Christian faith is lived out in the world demonstrate how rich and manifold Christianity is.

Working together in our Community

At the same time, it is important to discuss our differences and to ask critical questions of our brothers and sisters in Christ. From our conversations, we gain new insights and understanding of our shared faith. These conversations happen, for example, at the Women’s World Day of Prayer. Through this event, each year women from different confessions come together to prepare and to celebrate a shared worship service. Together with other congregations in Lichterfelde we also celebrate an annual ecumenical worship service. Over the past several years, we’ve developed a special relationship with the Paulusgemeinde Lichterfelde.

Conflict and Reconciliation

Official talks also take place between denominations. These talks can lead to beautiful encounters, such as in 2010, when Mennonites and Lutherans celebrated a joint worship service of reconciliation together in Stuttgart. In the 16th century, the Lutheran Church persecuted the Anabaptists, the forerunners of the Mennonites, to the point of death. Nearly five hundred years later, representatives of the Lutheran Church asked Mennonites for forgiveness. This event demonstrated the goal of ecumenism: the reconciliation of denominations so that they can together demonstrate God’s reconciliation with all people.

Baptism and Communion

We recognize the validity of baptisms performed by other denominations. If a baptized member of another denomination wishes to become a member of our congregation, we do not baptize them again. Moreover, we welcome all Christians to our communion table.

May they be one, so that the world may believe.
Johannes 17,21
